From counting to understanding

Early crowd analysis meant counting heads in camera frames. The field’s leap came with treating crowds as dynamic systems: computer vision for crowd management that estimates density and flow in real time, and spatio-temporal analytics that model how movement evolves across space and time. Research in congestion detection and flow prediction — published across IEEE and ACM venues — gave operators something they never had: foresight.

From understanding to intervention

Understanding a crowd is only half the problem; the other half is acting early. Scheduling research — optimising when and where groups move — became the foundation of Tafweej, which scheduled 2M+ pilgrims across Hajj seasons 2019–2023, and shuttle-optimisation research for the Mashaer area smoothed transport at peak flow. The work has been recognised internationally — the KAUST Challenge Grand Prize for Hajj and Umrah innovation, a Geneva International Inventions Bronze Medal, five best paper/presentation awards, and IEEE Senior Membership. Three frontiers stand out: multimodal sensing that fuses vision with signals and transport data; predictive digital twins of entire event sites; and privacy-preserving analytics that protect individuals while understanding aggregates.
